A Concierge’s Recommendation
As a hotelier and concierge in Vienna, I visit many restaurants. Some are elegant, some are historic, and some are delicious. Very few have everything at the same time. Pfarrwirt does.
Where to Find Pfarrwirt
The name may be a little difficult to pronounce, but the decision to visit is easy. Pfarrwirt is located in the beautiful 19th district, in Heiligenstadt. This is the quiet, green side of Vienna, where vineyards and old houses create a peaceful neighborhood. Locals love it here. Many come back for years, sometimes for generations. International guests are only starting to discover it, and once they do, they understand why Viennese people keep it for themselves.
The Oldest Restaurant in Vienna
Pfarrwirt is believed to be the oldest restaurant in Vienna. The building dates back to the 12th century. When you walk inside, you see original stone walls and old wooden floors. The air is calm and warm. It feels like stepping into living Viennese history. The restaurant was here long before us, and it will still be here long after us. Sitting at the table makes you feel like a small part of something much bigger.
Architecture That Tells a Story
The architecture has many stories to tell. The wooden veranda was added in 1827 and expanded in 1904. The famous red chalk drawings on the walls are from the 1400s. These drawings are extremely rare in Vienna and carefully protected. There is also the historic Prälatensaal, with a painted ceiling from 1711. Today, it is used for small weddings and private dinners, but it still feels like old Austria.
Art Inside the Restaurant
Art is part of the experience. When you enter, you might notice a work by Daniel Spoerri, known for his “Eat Art” concept. There is a table mounted on the wall that looks as if someone finished dinner and walked away. Glasses, plates and cutlery are frozen in time. It is modern, playful and surprising inside a building that is almost 900 years old.
A Quiet Dining Ritual
Pfarrwirt is wonderful for both lunch and dinner. During the day, sunlight fills the rooms and the view of the garden feels peaceful.
In the evening, the restaurant becomes warm and elegant. There is no rush and no noise. Sometimes there is not even background music. You hear plates being taken to the kitchen, wine being poured on the other side of the room, and the wooden floor moving softly under the waiter’s steps. The restaurant breathes in its own quiet rhythm.
In this restaurant, the ritual begins before the food arrives. You can sit, read a newspaper and enjoy the silence. It is a rare luxury in today’s busy world.
When you work in hospitality, you develop an eye for tiny details.
I once had a professor who measured cutlery with a ruler — not as a joke, but as a lesson. Every plate, every glass, every knife had to be in the exact position. At Pfarrwirt, nothing was out of place. My professor would have shed a tear of happiness.
Seasonal Dishes and Local Favorites
Many international guests order Schnitzel, Tafelspitz or Apfelstrudel. These dishes are excellent here. However, the locals know something more. This is one of the best places in Vienna for seasonal dishes. In autumn, people come for the goose, or as the Viennese say, Gansl.
The skin of the goose is crispy and golden. The meat is soft and tender. It is served with Rotkraut, a potato dumpling and warm chestnuts. I am usually not a big fan of chestnuts in main dishes, especially not cooked chestnuts. However, this was different. The chestnuts were soft, slightly sweet and matched the goose perfectly. The flavours worked together in a way that surprised me. I would return to Pfarrwirt just for this combination. It tasted like real Viennese autumn on a plate.
The starter was simple but delicious. Fresh bread, a house sausage, herb butter and a vegan tomato spread created a very traditional beginning. The flavours were honest and did not need anything extra to impress.
Dessert and Wine Pairings
For dessert, I ordered Pfarrwirt’s Maronireis. It was light, creamy and not too sweet. The chocolate sauce and fresh berries made it even better. It is the kind of dessert that fits perfectly in autumn and leaves you satisfied without feeling heavy.
I also have to mention the wine. I asked the waiter to choose for me. He brought a red wine that was smooth and balanced. The pairing with the goose was excellent. The flavours of the wine and the meat mixed together in a perfect way. It almost surprised me how well they matched. Before that, I tried a small glass of Junger Wiener 2025. This young white wine is fresh and elegant. It paired well with the starter and later with the dessert. It is a wine that gets better the longer it stands in the glass. The food and wine pairing here was very professional and well thought through.
A Place with Famous Guests
Pfarrwirt also has practical advantages. There is private parking and a beautiful garden for warmer months. On sunny days, it must be wonderful to sit outside with a glass of wine. Just a few steps away is Mayer am Pfarrplatz, the traditional wine tavern where Beethoven once lived. Two historic places stand side by side in one small corner of Vienna.
The guestbook has many signatures from well-known guests. Henry Kissinger, José Carreras, Udo Jürgens and others have enjoyed quiet dinners here. Nothing about the restaurant is loud or showy. Famous people visit for the same reasons as everyone else: privacy, authenticity and peaceful atmosphere.
If you want a real Viennese experience instead of a tourist restaurant, book your table here.
